Anonymous comments

For the time being, I've enabled anonymous comments on this blog. The last time I did this, I had a flood of spam comments to deal with, so I had to start requiring registration for comments. This time, I think I may have mitigated that problem somewhat.

After a few days, I'll be able to determine if the problem persists.

UPDATE: It didn't take a few days; it only took a few minutes. Anonymous comments are off again. Sorry.

Whoops. It didn't take them very long, did it. Askimet words well for me in keeping most of the spam at bay.

I've been on wordpress for 14 months and it's caught ... wait for it ...

73,000 pieces of spam. I must be living the good life or something.

Nope, didn't take long at all. Not surprisingly, I've disabled anonymous comments again.

Dang it.

I have found that a captcha for unregistered user comments eliminates about 99% of spam.

I've thought about implementing a captcha; I just need to research which ones work best with Community Server.

I've had the same problem. Wordpress does have Akismet to catch the bulk, but it's not perfect. I'm getting ready to try PrefPass to see if it's any better. Probably there is no fantastic solution that works better than forcing registration.

Jethro, I think you're probably right about the registration thing, although I would be willing to try either a captcha or some kind of OpenID/TypeKey solution, if I can find an implementation that works with Community Server.

I could write my own OpenID implementation, but I have more compelling things to do with my time, like laundry. And watching "Lost" online.

For now, though, I'm sticking with forced registration.
