Congressional Dems cave to Bush twice in one day
The spineless Democratic leadership of Congress has outdone itself; Pelosi and Reid caved to the Bush White House twice in one day.
On the proposed emergency stimulus package, House Dems caved to the White House and struck provisions which would have extended unemployment benefits and expanded the food stamps program. Of course, millionaires will still get their $1,200 rebate checks this spring, but the neediest among us will be left sucking air.
Not to be outdone by Nancy Pelosi in political cowering, Harry Reid caved to the Bush administration on amnesty for the phone companies in their participation in illegal, warrantless wiretapping by the NSA.
Since the Democratic leadership of both houses seem so eager to cave to Bush, it should come as no surprise that he has decided to nominate Steven Bradbury as assistant attorney general. Bradbury was the author of the legal opinions which reached the absurd conclusion that torture by CIA interrogators was legally permissible. Bush knows they'll cave on Bradbury just as surely as they've caved on almost everything else he wants.
We need and deserve stronger Congressional leadership than this. The Democrats were not handed control of Congress last year just for the purpose of caving to every whim of the most unpopular president in recent history. If they keep this up, they'll lose control of both houses.
