On an existential quest for the perfect brunch in Knoxville, Tennessee.
From a letter to the editor, in today's New York Times:
The true greatness of America is that we will survive eight years of George W. Bush.
I sure hope so.
But will we survive another 4 or 8 or a Castro style legacy of Bush?
What 2008 election? :)
Oh, we'll have an election all right, but even the most optimistic outcome may not help as much as I'd like. I remain pessimistic that the erosions of the Constitution won't be repaired. I can easily see any of the current candidates (except Kucinich) being tempted to keep warrantless wiretapping, signing statements, and assertions of executive privilege that trump the other two branches. I can also see most of them holding on to the use of torture as an interrogation technique.
It'll take some pretty heroic efforts by Congress to undo those horrid legacies of the Bush years, but I don't see that kind of leadership ever coming from Pelosi or Reid.
We'll survive Bush, but it will be many years before the country is recognizable again.
