Giving thanks
I probably won't be blogging much over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend; instead, I'll be busy eating and visiting with family and friends, and generally having a good time.
This is, of course, the time of year we're supposed to give thanks for things in our lives; I want to do that, but I'm afraid my list will come across as maudlin and cheesy.
Oh, what the hell -- I don't care. Here goes:
I'm thankful for the fact that my life is less complicated than most people's, and that I'm personally free from the burdens of poverty, hunger, and illness which inflict way too many people. I'm thankful that I live in a country where I can express myself freely (for the most part), where I can openly criticize the holders of power, and where I don't have to live in fear that my family will be tortured or murdered because of what I say (at least, not yet).
I'm grateful that we still live in a culture where positive change is still possible, where the disenfranchised can be given a voice (weak though that voice may sometimes be), and where progress is not yet a dirty word.
I'm grateful for my tight network of family and friends, who are loving, supportive, and mostly sane.
Mostly.
On a somewhat more selfish level, I'm also grateful for Netflix, Nama, and KnoxViews, in that order.
Happy Thanksgiving.
