The Last Supper, in 16 billion pixels

Whoa:

A 16 billion pixel image of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper has been posted on the internet, giving art lovers a detailed view of the 15th Century work.

[...]

"You can see how Leonardo made the cups transparent, something you can't ordinarily see," [art curator Alberto Artioli] said. "You can also note the state of degradation the painting is in."

This is 1,600 times more detailed than a 10 megapixel image.

This incredible image can be viewed here. This image shows clearly the serious and irreversible degradation suffered by da Vinci's masterpiece; even with that damage, it's possible to zoom in on details such as the medallions many of the figures wear on the necklines of their garments, and to see that most of them appear to be cameos. Although the original scenes depicted on those medallions are now largely lost, a few scattered details remain.
