Deliberations begin

Jurors began deliberating this morning in the trial of News Sentinel Editor Jack McElroy's lawsuit against Knox County Commission. The KNS is live-blogging the verdict, which I think is very cool.

Today's paper includes this article which recaps the closing arguments presented on Friday. Although the first few paragraphs are written in a somewhat breathless tone, it outlines the arguments of the two opposing sides in a reasonable and objective way.

I do find this paragraph a bit puzzling:

"Respect — R-E-S-P-E-C-T — for a fellow commissioner’s wishes is not a violation of the Open Meetings Act," Owings argued.

As R. Neal noted this morning, was Owings really quoting Aretha Franklin? If so, that's pretty hilarious, since the jury may well come back and sock it to him.

At least, I hope they do.
