Some stories from today worth thinking about

These stories from today's news either struck a chord or struck a nerve with me; I'm not sure which:

Americans who've lost their homes due to foreclosure are subject to a huge tax hit by the IRS. The amount of the forgiven debt is considered taxable income. One family lost their $106,000 home to Wells Fargo, who bought it for $1. The family received a tax bill from the IRS which counted the difference between those two amounts as income. Amazing. Talk about adding insult to injury.

The White House continues to ignore Congressional subpoenas, and continues to insist that the Vice President isn't part of the Office of the President. Their contempt of Congress is thrown into sharpest relief when Cheney told the Senate they were "not allowed" to issue subpoenas.

Bush met with Egyptian dissidents and told them that he feels like a dissident in Washington (specifically, against the bureaucracy under his control). Someone please hand that man a dictionary.

Michael Vick is pleading guilty. Yay!, although he deserves more than the 12-18 months he's likely to get.
