Sights in the night sky

Holy crap! I just saw the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle Atlantis fly directly overhead. The shuttle was first, then the space station followed quickly behind. They grew in brightness as they rose above the western horizon, and by the time they skirted past the Big Dipper, they were both as bright as Venus.

They moved very, very fast.

By the time they were directly overhead, they had moved into the Earth's shadow and were no longer visible.

The entire thing lasted only about a minute. Very cool.

Two nights later, on Friday the 22, I saw the International Space Station again. The Shuttle landed in California that day, so the ISS was by itself this time. But that transit was even brighter than the first one, and it was visible over a longer segment of the sky. Awesome.
