The tenth and eleventh circles of Hell

Dante was wrong: Hell doesn't have nine circles, it has ten. The tenth one is named Heathrow Airport, and it is reserved for air travelers who've wronged the Universe somehow.

Heathrow is by far the most poorly designed airport I've ever experienced. I've flown to or through it many, many times over the years, either with London as a destination or as a transfer point headed somewhere else, and not once has the experience gone smoothly. Not once have I experienced Heathrow without some kind of unnecessary drama.

When I'm traveling, drama is the last thing I need.

In all respects and under all circumstances, Heathrow Airport is dingy, poorly designed, illogical, frustrating, and runs counter to every single tenet of good design. And it smells bad.

Can you tell I've had some bad experiences there?

This article speaks to my frustrations, and this one previews the sparkly new eleventh circle of Hell called "Terminal 5."

I hate Heathrow.

I found I could fly through Gatwick, which had a wonderful duty free single malt Scotch shop. Think of it...an entire emporium dedicated to single malt Scotch. It's where I discovered LaPhroig.

Gatwick's not bad as a travel hub, either; it's much easier to transfer or get into Central London from there.

The single malt shop would make any travel nightmare just a little bit easier to take. ;-)
